This 3rd-century text famously describes Mary Magdalene as Jesus's "companion" (translated from the Coptic koinônos).

• The Kiss: It contains a passage frequently translated as: "The companion of Jesus is Mary Magdalene. He loved her more than all the disciples, and used to kiss her often on her mouth."

• The Disciples' Envy: The other disciples are bothered by Jesus's favor toward her, asking, "Why do you love her more than all of us?" Jesus responds by asking why he should not love them like her. 

• Symbolism: Rather than a romantic relationship, scholars generally understand the "kiss" and "companion" title in a Gnostic context. In early Christian communities, the "holy kiss" was a sign of peace, and in Gnosticism, the kiss on the mouth symbolizes the passing of divine breath, spiritual knowledge (gnosis), and equality as a spiritual alter ego.

 

The Gospel of Mary: 

 

This 2nd-century text presents Mary Magdalene as a leader and a visionary who received special revelations from Jesus that the male disciples did not.

• Spiritual Intimacy: The text portrays Jesus loving and guiding her, but emphasizes his respect for her spiritual capacity.

• The Conflict: After Jesus departs, Mary comforts the weeping disciples and shares a vision the Savior gave her. The disciple Peter becomes jealous and challenges her authority, stating, "Did he really speak privately with a woman and not openly to us? Are we to turn about and all listen to her?" Another disciple, Levi, defends Mary, rebuking Peter and affirming that Jesus made her worthy of his teachings.

 

The primary ancient, non-canonical text that describes an intimate relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene is the Gospel of Philip. It refers to her as Jesus's koinonos (a Greek term for companion or partner) and states that Jesus loved her more than the other disciples, often kissing her on the mouth.

The most wonderful relationship is when both the masculin-principle and the feminine-principle of the same Soul come together as husband-wife/spiritual consort. This becomes a blessed and blissful shared experience that begins with a “coup-de-foudre” spark to signal and seal the coming together in their lives!

Mary Magdalene was a spiritual teacher recognized by Jesus as his closest companion and disciple. They met when Jesus was 30; they met on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, in the region between Magdala and Capernium. Jesus had spent 40 days in the desert combating Satan after his baptism by John. Mary Magdalene was seeking spiritual recognition. When their gaze met there was a moment of absolute silence, time itself had stopped.

Great spiritual encounters are the result of preparations that transcend a single earthly life. The concept of complementary spiritual pairs destined to reunite to complete a sacred mission was central to the teachings of the early gnostic Christian communities. Mary and Jesus did not meet for the first time that day. Their souls recognized each other. They had prepared for that moment for eternities. And when they met something was activated in cosmic consciousness that would change the course of human history. It was the reunion of two beings who had known each other in dimensions beyond linear time. Jesus looked at her and saw the Soul who had traveled aeons of preparation to be in that moment. Mary looked at him and recognized not only the teacher, but the spiritual counterpart that her soul had sought through innumerable existences.

We are talking about something deeper and sacred than romantic love. The mutual recognition between two beings who embody the two complementary aspects of the divine whole.

According to the Provençal tradition, a few years after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, her daughter Sarah and their companions Lazarus, his sister Martha, Mary of Bethany, Mary Jacobé (sister of the Virgin Mary) and Mary Salomé fled Palestine by boat. Cast adrift without sails or oars, they miraculously survived a storm and landed in the Camargue region at what is now Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

Mary Magdalene's Calling:

Eventually, she withdrew from the world entirely, spending the final 30 years of her life as a hermit in a sacred cave in the Sainte-Baume mountains.
